Hi all,

 

Have finally got around to looking at the heater problem. I dropped the unit out this morning and found the redwire on the connector plug (heater unit fly lead) to be corroded. Soldered in a new piece of wire and tried the unit. It still didnt fire up. Gutted. I thought i'd cracked it :( . Would it be necessary to have to reset any fault codes etc before it might fire up ? I couldnt scan the heater module when i tried before beacause obviously there was no power getting to it which is why i was chuffed when i came across the broken wire. Ive got to get this fixed. The wife has said so. :lol:

Quite possibly, it depends on why it shut down in the first place - also you need the outside temperature to be below 10*c for it to attempt fire...

depends on the car mk1 doesn't show on vagcom as its a 3kw htr the mk2 is a 5kw. tell us what car it is.

look at wiper linkage bar battery side of car and theres a sensor there with 2 wires short it out then start car see if it fires up

Thanks for the replies. The car is a Mk2. 90 ps. 53 plate. On the tab on the unit it says D5W-Z or at least it looks like that.Its a bit faint . It also states its a 5kw model. Cheers

ah then you need vagcom on that model, check the air stat on wiper linkage tho that doesnt affect vagcom from talking to it, also check the fuses as if i think on theres 2 fuses one for the constant 12v and the other switched 12v. have a look thru my back posts ive put all the info regarding pin outs and what they do on here

I would say check for faults in Vagcom and act accordingly. If the ECU is not accessible then there is still some wire broken near the plug. Plenty info here on the forum.

I had a big interesting story typed out but when I went to attach a picture it disappeared. So here are the pics of the inside of an Eberspacher control unit de-gooped- for anyone interested????The blue and green wires are my own creations.

Ya that's the D5z-F.

I didn't find any specific problem but when I plug the heater back into the car loom there is no -dosing pump short to ground -error, anymore?? Dunno what happened to fix/get rid of the short. I traced the dosing pump circuit back as much as I could. The microprocessor sends a signal to the driver IC which drives 12v to the dosing pump. There is something funny with the grounding of the controller/heater. The case of the heater seems to be isolated from the car body, ie.. there is no continuity between the chassis and the heater body? I might try grounding the heater- see what happens???

I would like to get a dosing pump and a water pump someplace so I can try it off of the car.

 

Anyone out there have a dosing and water pump going really cheap!

 

I had to replace the brushes on the aux water pump as well!! A couple of makita brushes sanded down fit nicely. Used the '2mm drill bit through the pump casing trick', to keep the brushes back(described elsewhere on the forum). All thanks to the knowledge and experience of the good people on this forum. I would be lost without it- or blissfully ignorant!!!!!

seems cheap from the other post re glowplug ,is it the right part for the heter?

 

 

HI - Be careful - The correct glow plug for the D5WZ heater is from BERU P/N 0100 226340. Got mine from these guys http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=54 :

after trying other "equivalents" from Bosch and others - none of which fitted.

Did you have to unsolder the connector to get the board out? Mine does not want to move. Looks like you figured out how most the controller works, don't supposed you got close to drawing a circuit diagram?

Hi,

 

To be honest I dogged the board a bit to get it out. I desoldered the board as best I could with a 'pace' desoldering machine we have in work, so it made it a bit easier. It takes a lot of heat to remove the solder from some of the pins/wires, particularly the ground/power planes! It would desolder with braid/wick as well, if you have it?

 

When I levered out the board from the housing I broke the electrolytic cap off by accident! I just replaced it with a similar type. I think this cap was buried in the goop making it harder to remove the board.

 

A circuit diagram might be a bit of a stretch! If I have time some time when I'm working nights I might have a go at it. I'll try and identify some of the components by part number as well.

 

I can get the unit to fire on the bench, only using a syringe with some fuel in it( by the way, it will burn kerosene as well!), because I haven't found a cheap fuel metering pump yet.

 

I connected a relay to the metering pump output just to simulate its operation. It starts clicking and lasts for about 20 clicks but then stops? So I'm not sure if thats correct or not. There is a very good website, describing eber operation etc...Useful eber info

I understand that the existing partv in the heater has a threaded top and no fixed wires.Cheers.

You need to remove the existing wires from the main multi plug and then install the wires on the new plug in their place.

I did it over a year ago but cannot remember which wires go into which hole in the plug. A search might find a post that says.
